Three executives at TowneBank Mortgage gave their ideas on vital and effective team-building activities in emailed responses to Inside Business.
What have been the best or most unique team-building activities for your company? In a “people-first” business like ours, we’re big believers in authentic connection. Team-building isn’t just a to-do item for us, it’s about making moments that stick. Whether it’s the buzz of our virtual brain breaks (yes, with prizes!) or simply unwinding at our monthly catered lunches and happy hours, we always make space for people to truly connect. Those unique experiences, like a Tides family night or an American Rover sail, really bring us together outside the office, and that’s often where our best team bonds are made. — Taylor Malbon, Director of Mortgage Marketing
Why is camaraderie important for your workplace? Every individual in the company plays a critical role in a client’s mortgage journey — from the initial loan officer consultation to the final review — by underwriting and the post-closing work of shipping. For this reason, camaraderie isn’t just important, it’s essential. Our clients’ success is consistently elevated by our ability to function as a cohesive unit. This means open communication across departments, mutual respect and a shared understanding that we’re all working toward the same goal. A strong team bond naturally leads to an exceptional client experience. — Jim Miller, President and CEO
What team-building tips would you share with other workplaces? My top team-building tip for other workplaces is to vary your approach and also be consistent. Don’t rely on just one type of activity. Mix formal and informal, competitive and relaxed. Our success comes from a blend of activities like monthly catered lunches for casual camaraderie, facilitated virtual brain breaks for engagement, larger social events like happy hours, and unique team-building outings including sailing in the American Rover and paint nights. Consistency fosters excitement and shows your team that their well-being and relationship are a continuous priority, not a one-off event. — Alex Bain, Mortgage Event and Employee Engagement Manager
